Tour Highlights

Yunam Peak (6111 m) is a rare 6000 m peak in the Himalayas. It is a trekkable peak that can fulfill the higher ambitions of adventure enthusiasts for climbing and lay serious groundwork for technical mountaineering pursuits.

A soaring presence in the Lahaul-Spiti region, Yunam Peak is not entirely unknown to those who have travelled by the Leh-Manali highway, though it is not as frequently climbed as other peaks of the same stature. The summit offers an outstanding vantage point for views of the C.B. Range and Mulkilla Range — just one of many reasons to scale this peak.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival at Manali
Arrive at Manali and check into your hotel. Attend a detailed briefing on the expedition and meet your team. Take a short acclimatisation walk, followed by preparation for the expedition. Overnight at your hotel.

Day 2 – Manali to Keylong / Jispa
Your journey begins from Manali. Enjoy an adventurous ride on the Manali–Lahaul highway, passing through:

  • Snow-entrenched Rohtang Pass

  • Tandi – where the Bhaga and Chandra rivers meet

  • Sissu (Sisha) – with the magnificent temple of Raja Ghepan, presiding deity of Lahaul Valley

The Chandra and Bhaga rivers run alongside the route, creating magnificent photo opportunities.
At around 100–120 km from Manali (approx. 2:00 PM arrival), you will reach the Keylong-Jispa area. These towns are key centres of Lahauli ethnic culture.

  • Stay: Tented accommodation

  • Afternoon: Mandatory acclimatisation walk

  • Recommended visit: Khardang Monastery and Shashur Monastery in Keylong

Day 3 – Keylong to Bharatpur

  • Drive: Approx. 5 hours

  • Altitude: 4500 m

Bharatpur is a windy, cold desert rest point with sparse habitation, open only during the season. En route, enjoy short stopovers at:

  • Deepak Tal and Suraj Tal – mesmerising sapphire-coloured lakes reflecting the sky and mountains (Suraj Tal is the source of the Bhaga River)

  • Baralacha La – the highest motorable mountain pass

Arrive in Bharatpur by approximately 1:30 PM. Here you will find delightful dhabas serving a special local delicacy: flavoursome butter tea.

  • Stay: Tented accommodation

Day 4 – Acclimatisation Day
At this juncture, significant altitude gain may start showing effects — mild headache, nausea, and loss of appetite are common. Day 4 is kept entirely for adjusting to the climate and allowing your body to acclimate to thinning air and low temperatures.

  • Recommendations:

    • High fluid intake

    • Light load‑carrying exercise (avoid heavy exhaustion)

    • Short walks around the barren landscape

Day 5 – Bharatpur to Base Camp

  • Start: Early morning, around 7:00 AM

  • Distance: 4.5 km steep climb on a gradually gaining ascent curve

  • Trek duration: A little over 5 hours

The boulder‑ and moraine‑laden path can make inexperienced climbers prone to slipping. Crampons are necessary, especially in the later half where dense snow patches appear.
Do not need to carry 2–3 litres of water — there are many water points along the way. After one particular turn, the trek continues alongside a water stream.

  • Arrival at Base Camp: By mid‑noon

  • Setting: Small lakes nearby create a picturesque environment

Day 6 – Base Camp Acclimatisation
Today is an easy rest day, but you are not supposed to stay inside camp sleeping all day. Physical activity and outdoor exposure help acclimatisation.

  • Use the day to get accustomed to the surroundings and learn all routes in detail

  • Visit nearby places for stunning views

  • Your trek leader or guide will provide training on:

    • Teamwork

    • Snow‑climbing techniques

    • Challenges you may face on summit day

Day 7 – Base Camp → Summit (6111 m) → Base Camp

  • Start: 4:00 AM

  • Total duration: Approx. 8 hours

  • Distance: 6.5 km steep ascent

Terrain: Mostly moraine, sharp rock henges, and more snow‑covered areas than the previous day.

Water: Only one proper drinking water point on the trail — carry 3–4 litres per person in your daypack.

Challenges:

  • Numbing cold wind

  • Effects of extreme altitude and breathing difficulties

  • Hydration is critical

After around 6 hours, the moraine cover is replaced with thickening snow. The group must harness up at this point and move systematically. After an enduring stretch of semi‑technical climbing, the summit is reached.

  • Summit views: Sun‑struck pinnacles of Chandra Bhaga Range, Mulkilla Range, and the Lahaul valley below

  • Time on summit: Approx. 20 minutes

  • Descent back to Base Camp

Day 8 – Base Camp → Bharatpur → Drive to Manali

  • Trek: 4.5 km down from Base Camp to Bharatpur

  • Drive: Approx. 5 hours from Bharatpur to Manali

  • Arrival in Manali: Between 6:00 – 7:00 PM

Check into your hotel. Celebrate the successful expedition with a get‑together in the evening.
