Tour Highlights
-
Name: Karcha Parbat (also spelled Karcha Parvat)
-
Elevation: 6,270 meters (20,570 feet)
-
Location: Spiti sub-division of Lahaul & Spiti District, rising east of Kunzum Pass. The summit sits on a ridge marking the boundary between the Karcha Nala (a branch of the Chandra River) and the Gyundi Nala.
-
Prominence: The highest peak in a group of fourteen peaks in the Losar valley that stand above 5,900 meters.
The name "Karcha" is a local nomenclature, and the peak is clearly marked on topographical maps of this dynamic region. The surrounding area was first formally mapped by the Shelbourne Spiti-Kulu Expedition in 1958, with the first successful summit later in 1977 by an Irish team who gave it its current name.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Manali (2,050 m)
Arrive and check into your hotel. Afternoon rest with a short acclimatization walk. Evening expedition briefing and gear check.
Day 2: Manali – Rohtang Pass – Batal (3,900 m)
Drive from Manali, crossing the iconic Rohtang Pass (3,978 m). The route descends into the arid, high-altitude landscape of the Chandra Valley. Arrive at the remote hamlet of Batal by evening, surrounded by magnificent peaks. Overnight in a guesthouse or camp.
Day 3: Acclimatization & Visit to Chandra Tal (4,300 m)
Dedicated rest day for crucial acclimatization. A short trek to the breathtaking Chandra Tal Lake, whose deep blue waters reflect the surrounding peaks. This side trip is essential to prepare your body for higher altitudes ahead.
Day 4: Batal – Base Camp (approx. 4,450 m / 14,550 ft)
Drive to the nearest road head near the Karcha Nala. A moderate trek leads to the expedition's Base Camp, likely situated on the true right bank of the Karcha Nala, beneath the imposing southwest face of Karcha Parbat.
Days 5-7: Acclimatization & Puja Ceremony at Base Camp
A period of rest and acclimatization at BC. You will take short walks to higher vantage points to help adjust to the altitude. These days also allow the local team to sort gear, prepare loads, and hold a traditional Puja ceremony for a safe and successful climb.
Day 8: Base Camp to Advance Base Camp (ABC – approx. 4,900 m)
A steady climb upwards from BC to establish ABC. The trail may cross moraines and the frozen Karcha Nala before reaching a suitable site on a grassy meadow or glacial basin.
Days 9-10: Acclimatization & Reconnaissance
Rest and acclimatization days at ABC with short exploratory walks. Your guides will plan the route ahead, scouting for the safest passage through the glacier.
Day 11: ABC to Camp 1 (approx. 5,350 m / 17,500 ft)
A challenging day of ascent, likely over moraine and onto the lower ice. This establishes the first high camp on the planned route, potentially placed on a ridge system for safety.
Day 12: Rest Day at Camp 1
Mandatory rest to aid acclimatization. Review climbing techniques and plan for the summit push.
Day 13: Camp 1 to Camp 2 (approx. 5,750 m / 18,800 ft)
A technical climb higher onto the mountain's flanks, reaching the final camp before the summit attempt. Camps here offer stunning views of the surrounding peaks.
Days 14-15: Summit Push & Descent
An early morning start for the summit (weather permitting). The climb from Camp 2 involves steep snow and potentially rock sections, requiring focus and teamwork. After celebrating on the summit, the team will descend carefully back to Camp 2 or ABC.
Day 16: Contingency / Buffer Day
A reserve day for unexpected weather or to support a second, delayed summit attempt.
Day 17: Descent to Base Camp
A long day's descent, breaking camp and retracing your steps all the way back to BC.
Day 18: Base Camp to Batal – Drive to Manali
A final descent to the road head, then the drive back over Kunzum Pass and down to Manali for a well-deserved celebratory dinner and overnight stay.
