Route Map: Manali → Sethan → Chika Seri → Balugera → Hamta Pass → Shia Goru → Chandertal → Manali

Hamta Pass lies at an altitude of 4,270 m (14,009 ft) on the Pir Panjal range in the Himalayas. It is a small corridor between the Lahaul and Kullu valleys of Himachal Pradesh, India. The pass is named after Hamta Village, located below Sethan village. It is frequently used by shepherds from the lower Himalayan region who seek high-altitude grasslands in the dry cold desert of Lahaul during summer. At altitudes between 3,000 and 3,800 m, you will find numerous wild flowers and herbs. Key features of this trek include:

  • Vertical rock walls

  • Waterfalls

  • Hanging glaciers

  • Tiny lakes

  • Peaks rising above 6,000 m

A proper guide is needed to cross certain glaciers. From Hamta Pass, one can extend their journey towards the beautiful Chandertaal.

Chandra Taal (Lake of the Moon) – Located in the Spiti part of Lahaul & Spiti district, this crescent-shaped lake sits at an altitude of about 4,300 m (14,100 ft). Mountains of scree overlook the lake on one side, and a magnificent cirque presents a view on the other. It is a popular destination for trekkers and campers, accessible on foot from Batal or Kunzum Pass from late May to early October.
